Kumon innovations are changing the way students learn

In an increasingly competitive education industry, Kumon continues to outperform – serving tens of millions of students around the world, implementing latest innovations, and now earning its fifth consecutive top 10 finish.

Kumon was founded in 1958 by Toru Kumon, a highschool mathematics teacher in Japan, and the first overseas Kumon Math Center opened in New York in 1974. It uses the so-called “Kumon Method,” a system that helps students of all ages develop “both a high level of academic ability and the ability to learn independently,” with particular emphasis on math and reading skills.

In 2024, the brand introduced two essential initiatives: Kumon Connectand an English language program for Spanish speakers. “Both activities have been game-changers for our instructors and students,” says Mike Shim, senior vp of field operations for Kumon.

With Kumon Connect, students can complete assignments digitally using tablets. The program also allows instructors to “replay” student work and share feedback almost immediately, encouraging a positive pace of learning.

“Instructors tell us that the more students use Kumon Connect, the more efficient management of their centers becomes,” says Shim. “It’s a real win-win.”

Kumon’s English for Spanish Speakers program began in South Florida and the Los Angeles area, where there is a large Latino population. For franchises with bilingual instructors, this program is a competitive offering that gives students with a comprehensive, structured approach to learning English with all the “self-study” advantages of the Kumon method.

“Kumon Connect and the English for Spanish Speakers program are two examples of how we are innovating by putting the needs of our instructors and their students first,” says Shim. “These initiatives increase our competitiveness in both franchise and existing center development.”

Looking ahead to 2025, Kumon is interested in meeting with potential franchisees with educational experience. The company offers competitive incentives – as much as $38,700 for latest U.S. franchisees to cover rent reimbursement, signage, furniture and more – in addition to a low $2,000 franchise fee.

“We want the transition to business ownership to be seamless so that our instructors can realize the opportunities that come with being a part of Kumon,” says Shim. “Those who can combine their passion for teaching with a heart for business and community are ideal franchise owners.”
