Why Onyx thinks that the open source solution will win enterprises

Enterprises have internal data and information ailments that employees must perform their tasks or answer questions for potential clients. But this does not mean that the relevant information is easy to search out.

Onyx He wants to unravel this problem through the internal tool searching tool. There are other big names in the category, corresponding to Glean-which collected $ 600 million in the Venture-Walk financing for market share in the hot category, but onyx based in San Francisco has a distinguishing feature that helps to separate it from the package. This is Open Source.

Companies can operate onyx for about half-hour and mix with over 40 internal sources of the company’s data, including Salesforce, Github and Google Drive. Corporate users can then pay for additional function levels, corresponding to increased login security and increased encryption.

Chris Weaver, co -founder and co -founder of Onyx, said Techcrunch that he and his co -founder and co -founder of Yuhong Sun originally decided to unravel the problem each he and Sun saw in their engineering roles.

“We knew where it was roughly, but it was still a bit difficult, [and] New people just couldn’t find anything – said Weaver. “It seemed that there have to be a higher option to do this.”

Onyx is not the first try and Weaver and Sun to build a company. Their first idea, an application for tracking live statistics for Twitch streamers, goes well until Twitch killed the built -in streams and made the product essentially useless. Their second effort, a site that helps people compare special keyboards, also didn’t work.

But due to the SUN machine learning background and general progress in AI, Onyx technology – originally called Danswer, Portmanteau for a deep answer – was different. They released the original Open Source project in 2023 and immediately received a strong momentum and opinions.

“The ramp was in fact one of the first bands that found us,” said Sun. “At that time, we didn’t have any way to pay us or anything. We had nothing like support plans or anything, and there were no paid functions. For us it was like people really want to pay for our project. I mean, it is free, but people want to pay for it. So you know, maybe there is a chance to make this business. “

Today, the company cooperates with dozens of enterprises, including Netflix, Ramp and Thales Group. Sun and Weaver largely attribute the company’s success to the decision to open the software. It allowed corporations to experiment and avoid a long sales cycle of enterprises.

“Open Source is really the only way to take this type of scale and take over in every company in the world,” said Weaver.

Although he is convinced that Open Source is a winning internal search strategy, the team is in competition. In addition to startups corresponding to Glean, they are in the face of competition from corporations building their very own internal solutions, corresponding to fintech clarna, which built Internal search and tool chatbot, kiki.

Onyx is not discouraged. Weaver said that launching the internal search tool is really difficult, and he considers Onyx as a basic tool for corporations that need to build their very own internal search products. He said the evidence was in numbers.

“We saw the use of explosion,” said Sun. “In one week we reached the peak of over 160,000 messages. We really hope that we will pay for this organic growth and I hope that all teams in the world use Onyx one day. “

The company has also recently attracted a roundness of $ 10 million run by Khosl Ventures and First Round Capital, with the participation of Y Combinator and Angel Investors. Among them are Gokul Rajaram, a former member of the board of Coinbase and Pinterest; Arash Ferdsi, co -founder of Dropbox; and Amit Agarwal, former Datadog product director.

Onyx plans to make use of funds to employ staff and develop more premium functions.
