Many founders enter the recent industry with dreams of disruption. But when Randall Lane and Bob Daugherty released the National Thashbred League, their goal was different: an increase in older sport, which has long been cult, but largely unchanged.
Horse races are one of the oldest sports in history. But at a time when sports assets belong to the hottest investments, satirically lagged. Sport generates billions of revenues, but its growth remained flat, even when a wider sports industry increases.
“It’s a puzzle,” says Lane. “Why does a sport that everyone knows is not widely popular, with tens of millions of fans and billions already published, evolution like others?”
Taking the reins
Like all essential sports, the National Thregbred League Foundation is ticket sales. They are not only the largest income driver in the league, but also attract sponsors. When the sale of tickets occurs and the sponsors come on board, media corporations begin to look at the right to broadcast. This is where real money is for leagues corresponding to NFL and NBA.
But horse races offer something that sports do not have: a built -in stream of gambling revenues.
“Unlike other leagues, which they barely see ten centuries from the plants, we use directly,” says Lane. “This means that we are not just a sports league – we are also a gambling company. Both industries are developing, and the possibility of acting both, smoothly and naturally, is a huge advantage.”
The founders of NTL took suggestions from traditional human -oriented leagues, corresponding to NFL and NBA, aimed at supporting the sense of community among fans by creating teams.
Daugherty, from Cleveland, says that his 94-year-old father still calls him after each game Cavaliers. He dreams of the day on which families talk about Maryland COLTS or Philadelphia Stallions with the same passion. Lane perceives Formula 1 as a real northern star for NTL.
“We want to become F1 racial races, both in terms of experience and scope,” he says. “We are on the right track to become a bridge for everyday sports fans to fall in love with racial races. If we manage to develop fans of this well -deserved sport, the whole industry can benefit.”
In terms of content, horse races are adapted to the age of social media. Instead of cutting a two-hour game in a drum with the most significant, NTL can publish the entire race in lower than two minutes-just the last episode.
Jokers for attention
Building this sort of loyalty results in stars, which is difficult in sport, in which athletes’ personalities come right down to how much hay they eat. To help Bridge this gap, NTL joined forces with loud owners, corresponding to playmaker Ravens Lamar Jackson and NBA Hall of Famer Julius Ervinga, each who are the owners of the teams.
“Our owners are part of this experience,” says Daughrty. “Dr. J was amazing – when he went to Phoenix, he met the jockey, joined the fans and after the championship he fell with champagne.”

The league also uses Lane’s origin in Forbes, where he created the iconic forbes 30 list below 30 and a list of athletes of the best paid Forbes and is currently the content director.
“Sport and media are similar,” says Lane. “It’s about gathering the audience and giving people a product they want to buy.”
Due to its origin, he is extremely oriented in the strength of telling stories and is already using it in its favor with NTL.
“Everyone loves horses, he says.” From old people to my daughters, horses have a common charm. By creating stars around them, we are able to tell perfect stories. “
In addition, unlike other leagues, they will never have to worry that one of their athletes tweets something controversial.
In the spirit of avoiding NTL’s controversy, the health and safety of horses was the main priority. Due to the fragmentation of horses races, there is a lack of strong safety standards in the industry. Lane considers this weak point as another path to innovation, saying: “It allows us to make the exact races as protected as possible, setting the rules of the legal league with which everyone must follow.”
Daugherty perceives horses as no different from a family pet.
“Yes, it’s a sport,” he admits. “But the racial sea was bred for running – and running quickly.”
He adds that he and Lane have been invited to hitch the Directors Council for Horse Integrity and Safety (HISA) by Director General Lisa Lazarus, and NTL also transfers to the postoperative alliance.
“Our goal is to establish the best horse races in the world, create an amazing experience for our fans, sponsors and patrons,” says Daugherty. “It starts with caring for athletes.”
Going to the third season, NTL is still at the starting of the race. But because of the wealthy history of sport and the modern approach of the founders, the league looks like a distance.
