From corporate to construction: how the turn in my career reflects the trend

When the tech industry layoffs hit me in 2023, I used to be able to apply for one other leadership role at a large company. Instead, I focused heavily on construction. Today, I own and operate a multi-territory Ideal Siding franchise in Boston that is already generating seven-figure revenues. But more importantly, my journey is a part of a larger movement – white-collar professionals like me are trading desks for hard hats and discovering untapped opportunities in this industry.

Increased migration of white-collar employees to manual work

My story is not unique. I’m a part of a growing trend of pros leaving traditional paperwork for careers in trades and home services. Several aspects influence this alteration:

  1. Economic instability in white-collar jobs: Industries equivalent to technology are increasingly susceptible to disruptions equivalent to layoffs and automation. AND ADP Research Report 2024 highlights how artificial intelligence is changing the labor market, leaving many knowledge employees uncertain about job security. I knew I didn’t want to be at the mercy of one other layoff. After a long time of working in the technology industry, where the ground fell away every few years, I wanted something more solid and predictable.
  2. Resilience of blue-collar industries: Unlike technology or finance, industries equivalent to construction and home services are less susceptible to rapid technological disruption. As I like to say, “ChatGPT won’t be putting siding on houses any time soon.” My Perfect siding Franchising advantages from the regular demand for home renovations and repairs, offering stability that many white-collar jobs not offer. People will all the time need maintenance on their homes; that is a comforting thought when you are trying to build a business.
  3. Entrepreneurship Appeal: Like many professionals, I used to be attracted to the autonomy and potential profitability of owning my own business. Franchising offered a structured way to start a business with reduced risk – this was a key factor in my decision to invest in Ideal Siding. I wanted to be in control of my destiny, and the franchise gave me a framework in which I could do that without betting every thing on a completely unproven idea.

How my corporate experience became an advantage

One of the most surprising things about my transition is that my corporate experience gave me an advantage in the construction industry, a field in which I had no prior experience. Ideal Siding seeks franchisees with corporate backgrounds, believing that skills equivalent to sales, operational management and customer support can set us apart from traditional contractors. They select franchisees who are good business owners, no matter construction experience.

In my case, this approach paid off. In lower than two years since launching my franchise in August 2023, I have accomplished several high-value projects, equivalent to a $230,000 business renovation, and plan to further expand my territory into the Greater Boston area. My ability to effectively plan and manage operations and communicate professionally with clients has helped me stand out in a competitive market. Our 25-year warranty combined with a customer-focused approach that makes us look extremely skilled is a winning combination.

Home services industry: growing opportunities

My success also reflects broader trends in the home services industry. According to Housecall Pro Report 202477% of home service professionals expect their businesses to grow in 2025, driven by increasing demand for expert labor and the essential nature of their work. The industry’s resilience to periods of economic uncertainty makes it an attractive option for entrepreneurs looking for stable and profitable ventures. The demand exists and is constant.

Moreover, these professions are increasingly seen as a viable alternative to traditional university pathways. With a growing variety of job seekers and skills shortages creating a high demand for employees, a blue-collar career provides long-term job security. For professionals like me, these aspects make industries like construction not only stable, but also highly profitable.

Lessons I’ve learned along the way

My career pivot has taught me worthwhile lessons, especially for aspiring entrepreneurs and hustlers considering similar changes:

  1. Experience in the industry is not all the time needed: My story debunks the myth that you simply need years of hands-on experience to succeed in the blue-collar industry. By leveraging my corporate skills and working with a franchise that provided solid support equivalent to lead generation and marketing, I used to be able to get off the ground quickly. Ideal Siding gave me over 550 leads in the first yr. Honestly, I used to be initially attracted to Ideal Siding as a company that provided leads. I’m stronger in customer support than I’m in marketing, so this was a game changer.
  2. Adaptability is key: I’m originally from France but moved to Boston to pursue a corporate career before running a small business. My adaptability highlights the importance of being open to recent opportunities, even if they are outside your comfort zone. Moving to the United States was a big change, but the embrace of the franchise was even greater.
  3. Franchising can reduce risk: For those that are hesitant to start a business from scratch, franchising offers a proven model with built-in support systems. Ideal Siding’s call center and digital marketing team gave me a significant advantage by allowing me to focus on closing deals and managing projects. The time I didn’t have to spend looking for potential clients myself was invaluable in those first months.
  4. Prioritize customer experience: One of the ways I differentiate my company is through professionalism and customer-focused service – hallmarks of my corporate experience. Maintaining strong relationships with vendors has helped me build customer trust and ensure repeat business. I also placed emphasis on getting to know the local people. One of my favorite memories since opening was renovating an early twentieth century historic home. I had to work inside the guidelines provided by the Lexington Historic Community and special order cedar siding. This job, in addition to a $230,000 project where I worked with a business building manager, helped me settle into the community.

A broader shift towards working-class careers

My journey is not only a story of individual success; represents a broader cultural shift towards valuing expert trades as a viable career path for professionals at all stages of life. As economic uncertainty continues in white-collar industries, I think more employees will likely follow in my footsteps, contributing their expertise to fields where they will make a tangible impact while having fun with greater stability.

For all hustlers, sole proprietors and family business owners, my story is each an inspiration and proof that it is possible to change your career path at any time. I moved to the United States to look for work, but I discovered the most success working on my own. Whether you are considering franchising or exploring opportunities in blue-collar industries, now is the perfect time to take the leap.

By accepting change and leveraging your unique skills, you can also turn challenges into opportunities, and possibly even find greater achievement along the way.
