Over the past decade, the corporations have spent billions on data infrastructure. Petabyte magazines. Real -time pipelines. Machine learning platforms (ML).
And yet – ask why it increased last week, why Churn increased, and you will probably receive three contradictory navigation desktops. Ask the funds to reconcile performance between attribution systems, and you will hear: “It depends on who you ask.”
In the world of navigation desktops, one truth still appears: data is not a problem – pondering about the product is.
Quiet collapse of “data as a service”
Over the years, data teams acted as internal consultations-reactive, based on tickets, powered by heroes. This model “Data-AS-A-Service” (Daas) was high quality when the data demands were small and the rates were low. But when the corporations became “based on data”, this model broke under the weight of its own success.
Take Airbnb. Before launching the metric platform, the Products, Finance and OPS team pulled their very own versions of indicators, comparable to:
- Reserved nights
- Active user
- Available list
Even easy KPIs vary depending on the filters, sources and the one who asked. In leadership reviews, various teams presented different numbers – resulting in arguments whose record was “correct”, not motion.
These are not technological failures. These are product failures.
Consequences
- Data distrust: Analysts are secondly. Navigation desktops are abandoned.
- Human routers: data scientists spend more time explaining the discrepancy than generating insights.
- Rurouines Redundant: Engineers rebuild similar data sets in various teams.
- Decision of decisions: Leaders delay or ignore motion because of inconsistent input data.
Because data trust is a product, not a technical problem
Most data leaders imagine that they have a problem with data quality. But take a closer look and you will find a problem with data confidence:
- Your experiments platform says that the function hurts – but product leaders do not imagine it.
- OPS sees a dashboard that is contrary to their experienced experience.
- Two teams use the same metric name, but a different logic.
The pipelines work. SQL is solid. But no one trusts the exits.
This is a product failure, not engineering. Because the systems have not been designed for usefulness, interpretation or decision making.
Enter: Data Product Manager
The recent role appeared in the best corporations – Data Product Manager (DPM). Unlike the generalist PMS, DPM operate through fragile, invisible, interfunctional area. Their task is to not send navigation desktops. This is to make sure adequate insight in the right time to make a decision.
But DPM does not stop at the oil stroke in navigation desktops or drawing tables. The best go further: they ask: “Does it actually help someone better do your job?” They define success not in terms of results but results. Not “was it sent?” But “has it significantly improved someone’s work or the quality of decisions?”
In practice, this implies:
- Do not define only users; Watch them. Ask how they imagine that the product works. Sit next to them. Your task is to not send a set of data – it is a simpler customer. This means a deep understanding of how the product matches the real context of their work.
- Your own canonical indicators and treat them as API-Version interfaces, documented, ruled-and make sure they are associated with consistent decisions, comparable to budget unlocking in the amount of $ 10 million or launching Go/NO-GO products.
- Build interfaces – comparable to stores with functions and interfaces of pure room interfaces – not as infrastructure, but as real products with contracts, SLA, users and feedback loops.
- Say not projects that appear sophisticated but don’t matter. A data pipeline that no team uses is a technical debt, not progress.
- Durability project. Many data products do not disappoint from bad modeling, but from fragile systems: undocumented logic, flake pipelines, ownership of shadows. Build with the assumption that your future me – or substitute – will thank you.
- Solve horizontally. Unlike PMS specific to the domain, DPM must consistently increase. The logic of the lifetime of one team (LTV) is a budget contribution of one other team. A seemingly minor metric update may have the consequences of the second order between marketing, funds and operations. Attaching this complexity is a task.
In DPM corporations, they quietly define the way the construction, management and acceptance of internal data systems. There are no data to wash. They are to imagine the organizations again.
Why it took so long
Over the years, we have mistaken activity with progress. Data engineers built pipelines. Scientists have built models. Analysts built navigation desktops. But no person asked: “Will this insight change the business decision?” Or worse: we asked, but no one was the owner of the answer.
Because executive decisions are now via data
In today’s enterprise, almost every necessary decision – budget changes, recent launch, restructuring ORG – first passes through a layer of data. But these layers are often uninhabited:
- The metric version used in the last quarter has modified – but no person knows when and why.
- The logic of experiments differs between teams.
- Attribution models contradictory, each with probable logic.
DPM are not the owners of the decision – they are the owners of the interface that makes the decision readable.
DPM provides interpretation of indicators, the assumptions are transparent, and the tools are adapted to real work flows. Without them, the paralysis of the decision becomes the norm.
Why this role will speed up in the AI era
Ai is not going to replace DPMS. This will make them essential:
- 80% of the efforts of the AI project still belong to data readiness (Forrester).
- As a scale of large language models (LLMS), the cost of garbage input compounds. Ai is not going to fix bad data – it strengthens it.
- Regulatory pressure (EU AI Act, California Consumer Privacy Act) pushes org to treat internal data systems with a rigorous product.
DPM are not traffic coordinators. They are architects of trust, interpretation and responsible AI foundations.
So what now?
If you are CPO, CTO or data boss, ask:
- Who owns data systems that drive our biggest decisions?
- Are our internal API interfaces and indicators administered, detected and ruled?
- Do we know which data products are accepted – and which quietly undermine trust?
If you cannot answer clearly, you don’t need more navigation desktops.
You need data product manager.
