Hold on. This all sounds great in theory, but let’s face it: betting on Gen. AI to take over your R&D efforts will likely backfire in significant, if not catastrophic, ways. Whether you’re an early-stage startup looking for growth or an established player defending your territory, outsourcing generative tasks in your innovation process is a dangerous game. In the rush to recent technologies, we risk losing the essence of what constitutes truly disruptive innovations – and worse, sending the entire industry into a death spiral of homogenized, uninspired products.

Let me explain why over-reliance on generational AI in research and development may be the Achilles’ heel of innovation.

1. Unoriginal Artificial Intelligence Genius: Prediction imagination

Generation AI is essentially a supercharged prediction machine. It creates by predicting which words, images, designs, or pieces of code are best suited, based on an extensive history of precedent. When used properly, it could possibly increase productivity without stifling creativity.

The trick is this: we want to make sure that AI works as a complement, not a substitute, for human creativity. Human scientists must remain at the center of the innovation process, using AI tools to enrich their efforts, but never relinquishing control of creativity, vision and strategic direction to the algorithm.

Generation AI has arrived, but with it a constant need for that rare, powerful spark of human curiosity and audacity – one that may never be reduced to a machine learning model. Let’s not lose sight of this.
