JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon argues that young people should spend less time on social media and more time reading books.

Dimon was speaking at the annual Financial Markets Quality Conference hosted by Georgetown Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy when he was asked if he had any advice for students.

“For most of you, turn off TikTok, Facebook. Totally stupid waste of time,” Dimon said.

Dimon said a much higher use of time can be to read widely and delve into history books.

“My advice to students: Study, study, study, study, study, study, study, study. If you’re a Democrat, read the Republican opinions, the good ones. If you’re a Republican, read the Democratic ones,” Dimon said earlier in his response.

“Read history books. You can’t make it up. Nelson Mandela, Abe Lincoln, Sam Walton. You only learn by reading and talking to other people. There’s no other way,” he added.

Dimon’s representatives at JPMorgan, TikTok and Meta didn’t immediately reply to requests for comment sent outside normal business hours.

Unlike most corporate executives, Dimon tries to avoid social media.

Apart from LinkedIn, Dimon doesn’t use platforms like Facebook, X or TikTok — although he admitted in 2021 that he does Instagram account with fake username.

“There is no doubt that social media has some really negative effects, from election manipulation to the increasingly documented negative mental health effects on children,” Dimon wrote.

“These are issues that impact our individual and collective spheres,” he added, “and it’s time for social media companies to do more to address these challenges — and fast.”
