Lightspeed LA, a recent game development studio under Tencent’s Lightspeed & Quantum Studio group, has signed an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) to implement AI safeguards in upcoming games.
The agreement, reached today after negotiations between representatives of Lightspeed LA and SAG-AFTRA, allows Lightspeed to use and hire union actors to star in Lightspeed’s development and future games. It allows Lightspeed LA to proceed to use union staff even if SAG-AFTRA goes on strike, what the guild voted to do a little over a month ago.
The strike in query is over the use of generative AI in video game products, which threatens to displace work performed by human actors. Lightspeed LA is implementing the protections the union requested, but the parties are not disclosing details beyond the agreement.
Lightspeed LA is currently working on Last Sentinel, a neo-futuristic apocalyptic game that sarcastically takes place against the backdrop of technology gone awry. Last Sentinel was first shown off with a CG trailer at The Game Awards in 2023. The deal with SAG-AFTRA also covers Last Sentinel and the studio’s future projects.
