TDK supports Ultraviolette with $ 21 million to take Indian global electric motorcycles

Two months ago, the Indian Electric Motorcycle Startup Ultraviolette expanded to 10 European countries. Now, powered by $ 21 million in the round of the entire equity run by the corporate arm of the Japanese electronics project TDK Corporation, Ultraviolette introduces its plans for expansion into the extent.

The nine-year startup plans to develop its European trail 4 times, enter other motorcycle-powered markets, akin to Latin America and Southeast Asia, and also increase your portfolio to 14 models to early 2027. In February, global Ultraviolette extension.

Behind Ultraviolette there are two childhood friends-general director Naraayan Subramaniam and Cto Niraj Rajmohan-where-thes combined their knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering, automotive design, computer science and electronics in order to electrify the market of two-wheelers in the middle of the segment.

The duo that drew inspiration from Tesla began ultraviolet at a time when the Indian two -wheeled electric market was dominated by low -speed models, mainly satisfying business and public needs. The early boom was powered by Chinese imports offering low cost options, and then a wave of home startups, and recently older producers entering the space.

Instead of becoming one other player in this race, the co -founders of Ultraviolette decided to build electric motorcycles that would match the performance of sports motorcycles of flue gas engines from 1500 cm3.

“We asked ourselves, do we have to make electric exciting in two -wheeled, what would it be? And this is the goal we started from,” said Rajmohan (in the photo above, on the right) in an exclusive interview.

The startup from Bengalur lasted about 4 years from the very starting in 2016 to reveal the first model in 2019. The startup has undergone many design iterations before the seventh version was finalized-then the name F77. The business version debuted with a everlasting battery package to ensure over 186 miles of range and a maximum speed of 96 miles/hour with a power of 30 kW and up to 100 Newton-Time torque.

Ultraviolette has also presented a light shock motorcycle, in addition to a Tesseract scooter, which has front and rear radars and cameras to allow support for supported driving and detecting BlindSpot. Scooter costs 120,000 ₹ (1370 USD), while its motorcycles (Ex-show showroom) have a basic price of 175,000 ₹ ($ 2000) and increases to USD 10,000.

Ultraviolette vehicles are equipped with ESIM connectivity and contain predictive maintenance driven by a reserved diagnostic system. Rajmohan said that the system can detect even minor problems, for example when the chain needs lubrication. The startup offers an application that gives consumers with all these observations.

The company also founded a production and assembly facility in Bengalur Electronics City, with a capability of 30,000 pieces. Today, the company serves the whole lot that internally, from developing built -in software and battery management systems to engine controllers, and even battery production. About 500 people work in Ultraviolette, including 200 in corporate functions and research and development.

The Ultraviolette business model has been partly shaped by Tesla owners. Co -founders hung out talking to Tesla owners in the USA, who were one of the first to buy the S model in 2015 to discover what distinguished this automobile from other electric vehicles of their time.

“These Tesla cars were unique because their possession was perceived as progressive. It was more a lifestyle statement,” said Rajmohan, said Techcrunch.

Co -founders brought this sentiment to the Ultraviolette design and branding, aimed at making it a global company from the first day. As Rajmohan explained, the word “purple” is pronounced similarly in over 30 European languages, and “Ultra” signals something newest. Strengthening this ambition, the startup sought the European certificate of all its vehicles before entering the market.

This is unlike other Indian electric producers of two -wheeled individuals who have tried to satisfy local demand. India they constitute almost 40% of the global sales of motorcycles – Although most of them are powered by internal combustion engines.

The extension outside of India has a strategic meaning for ultraviolet, taking into account the domestic EV market stays relatively insufficient – with adoption of only 7.66%, compared to the average global 16.48%, according to A Last report by the Think Tank Niti Aayog supported by the government. While India is aimed at achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030, so far progress suggests that this will be an ambitious goal.

India is also a price that is sensitive to the price, at which two -wheeled purchases are normally discretionary purchases, but the mandatory and inexpensive modes of day by day transport. As a result, the sale of high-class variants on a large scale in the country might be a challenge for ultraviolet-at least initially.

“We were very clear that what we do, we work on segments that are more universal,” said Rajmohan.

Ultraviolette plans to increase the capability of the production plant in Bengalur to 60,000 and adding a larger location to the scale to about 300,000 at the starting of next yr. Ultraviolette runs 20 stores in 20 Indian cities and plans to increase to around 100 until March next yr. It is expected that about 50 of those stores – one to the city – will open in the holiday season later this yr.

Rajmohan told Techcrunch that the startup is working on expanding his European presence, in which he has 40 dealers.

“There is a scale in Europe next year,” he said.

Startup also plans to arrange its pilot in Latin America and Southeast Asia next yr and go to markets, including in the USA and Japan later.

Ultraviolette has sold over 3,000 motorcycles in India and provides for sales up to 10,000 this yr. By the end of this budget yr, he also generated over $ 50 million in revenues. Until now, he has collected about 75 million dollars of financing and counts the Motor Qualcomm Ventures, Exor and TVS Motor among other key investors.
