The past 12 months was a significant turning point in the development of artificial intelligence. However, beneath the headlines lies the undeniable fact that this pioneering industry is mainly made up of immigrants.
Immigrants have long powered the US tech industry. Most of the founders and executives of US tech giants akin to Alphabet, Microsoft AND Tesla they are immigrants.

Breaking down barriers

We attribute this growth to rising industry sentiment and the willingness of India’s vast talent pool to contribute to the US tech ecosystem. This staggering growth underscores not only the appeal of an American education, but also the critical role international students play in the technological advances shaping our future.
The United States must reform its immigration laws to harness the potential of world talent. Creating pathways to facilitate the transition from academia to industry for international STEM talent is not only about filling immediate labor shortages; it’s about investing in the long-term technological sovereignty and national security of the United States.
Congress should extend the duration of the Optional Practical Training and Practical Education Program, programs that allow students to stay in the U.S. temporarily after graduation. Additionally, students with in-demand skills needs to be exempt from the H-1B lottery, which allows them to stay in the U.S. and work for an additional six years, and from green card limits, which might allow them to remain in the country permanently. It is price creating additional immigration pathways for experts in artificial intelligence or STEM to make sure that the United States stays the epicenter of technological innovation and military supremacy.
The United States is at a crossroads and could further strengthen its leadership in artificial intelligence or lose ground to competitors due to restrictive immigration policies. By welcoming and facilitating the flow of world talent into its world-leading academic institutions and then into the technology workforce, the United States can ensure its continued dominance in the AI revolution.
